The Observatory · Western astrology
Your Western birth chart
Western astrology maps the sky at the moment you were born onto twelve signs and twelve houses. The signs follow the seasons (the tropical zodiac), so your Sun sign tells you where the Sun stood in the year’s turning when you arrived.
In the Observatory, your chart is a house with twelve rooms, and the planets are the guests who live in them. Each one has a temperament, a room it lives in, and conversations it keeps with the others.
How it works
Three things to know
The signs
Twelve signs, each a way of doing things: Capricorn builds, Gemini connects, Pisces dissolves the edges.
The houses
Twelve areas of life, from self and money to partnership and calling. They need an exact birth time.
The aspects
The angles between planets. A square is friction that gets things moving; a trine is ease.
In the Observatory
Turn the wheel, open any house, and ask the Observatory’s guide what a placement means for you today.
From Daniela's sky
Daniela has the Sun, Moon and Mercury together in Capricorn in the first house, with Sagittarius rising and Neptune right on the Ascendant. Saturn and Pluto sit together on her Midheaven in Libra.
Questions
Western astrology, asked
What do I need to calculate my Western chart?
Your birth date, birth time and birthplace. Without a birth time you still get your planets in their signs, but no rising sign and no houses.
Which zodiac and house system does And Said Star use?
The tropical zodiac, which follows the seasons, and Placidus houses, the most widely used system in Western astrology today.
Why is my Sun sign different in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the constellations. The two are currently about 24 degrees apart, so many people move back one sign. Both are in the temple.
